"My Kingdom Come" MIDWEEK MIX 1

When Jesus was tortured, beaten, and crucified, the people thought that he had lost the battle and messed up the plan - but Jesus said, "I have to do this so the kingdom can come."

We get pretty bothered when things don't turn out the way we expected, don't we? It's tough to have faith when our plans are shattering and only holding together with duct tape.

When things get hot, we focus on ourselves and plot how in the world we're going to make this story work out. We want to control our own lives.

It's not that we ignore God, but you know, he's more of back-up or a desperate phone-a-friend.  Every so often, we'll take him out of the box and look at him for a while. We'll ask him if he would kindly grant our wishes. When things work out, we say "yay, God!" - and then put him back in the box when we're done with him.

It's not in times of ease that we discover whether or not we're really sold on God's plan - it's when we find that despite our best efforts, things aren't quite right. The demons come out. Our old nature boils up.

We make it about our kingdom, not God's kingdom.

In the time that we thought Jesus went away and things were messed up, he was actually preparing the kingdom for us. I don't know about you, but if Jesus and I were both building a kingdom, I wouldn't bet the farm on mine being superior.

Jesus teaches us to pray and live by seeking God's kingdom (Luke 11:2, Matthew 6:33) - when we work towards that, everything we could ever need will be given to us. That's a Bible promise!

We don't have to sit around and wonder what God has for us. We don't have to wait for the kingdom to come. It's here. The kingdom is living and active now.

You're either a part of the kingdom, or you're a part of your kingdom.

Take some time to reflect on the days that have passed since Sunday. Have you been working to build God's kingdom or your own? How did you react when things got hot? What does it look like for you to set your kingdom aside to pursue God's kingdom?
